Real Salt Lake History

The team gets its name from its first owner, Dave Checketts, and his admiration for the Real Madrid soccer team. Real, meaning "royal" in Spanish, is a term used by Spanish clubs who have recieved royal patronage from a Spanish King.

Real Salt Lake came into Major League Soccer with a rocky start, but began performing better after their move from Rice-Eccles Stadium to Rio Tinto Stadium. They made it to the playoffs for the first time in 2008, until being bested by the Red Bulls in the Western Conference final that year. The following year brought Real their first MLS Cup title. By 2011, Real Salt Lake had an unbeaten home record of 29 games.

2018 brought Real the opening of the Training Center and Zion's Bank Real Academy in Utah. The facility offers world class training amenities to the team, as well as divisional and affiliate teams.

Real's most fierce rivalry is with the Colorado Rapids, with whom they participate in the Rocky Mountain Cup. Though the series was dominated by the Rapids for the first 3 years, RSL currently leads the series 10-4.
