A Historic MLS Team
With their first kick off in 1996, the Colorado Rapids helped bring professional soccer into the national spotlight. They quickly established themselves as a league contender, competing in the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Thanks to Adrian Paz the Rapids secured a goal in the Cup, but in the end lost 2-1 to D.C. United. With the addition of players Anders Limpar and Marcus Hahnemann the club went on to the U.S. Open Cup final, but lost 2-0 to the Rochester Raging Rhinos. In 2000 player Marcelo Balboa’s bicycle kick was named Goal of the Year. In 2001 a new head coach, Tim Hankinson, joined the Rapids. Hankinson did bring pure talent to the team such as players Mark Chung, Chris Henderson, Carlos Valderrama, and Joe Cannon and it was thanks to them that the team made the playoffs every year. However, Hankinson added on expensive and unsuccessful players like Zizi Roberts and Darryl Powell, too. In 2002 the team had a new home of Invesco Field at Mile High. They acquired two stars, Pablo Mastroeni and Kyle Beckerman. Chris Henderson became the first player to score a goal at the brand-new stadium.
Recent Years
Flash forward to more recent years, the club’s colors changed to burgundy and blue and they moved to the state-of-the-art soccer stadium at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. After the 2015 season where Colorado finished last in the Western Conference, major changes were made to the team’s line-up. The change included adding players Shkelzen Gashi, Marco Pappa, Jermaine Jones, and Tim Howard. With the additions, the team had a successful 2016 season with a 15-game unbeaten streak and making it to the Western Conference Championship. In 2017 Jermaine Jones left the club, and Sam Cronin and Marc Burch were traded. The team struggled that season and head coach Pablo Mastroeni was fired at the end of it. To make for a better 2018, the team hired former New Zealand coach Anthony Hudson to replace Mastroeni. The team made several additions, trades, and changes. After going winless on the first eleven games of 2019, Hudson was replaced by Conor Casey as interim head coach. With new leadership and additions Benny Feilhaber, Kei Kamara, Diego Rubio, Keegan Rosenberry and youngsters Jonathan Lewis, Matt Hundley, Sam Raben, and Andre Shinyashiki the team is hoping to have a better outcome in the upcoming seasons.
