Determined and Persistent
Philadelphia missed out on getting a team when Major League Soccer was established in 1996, but it was swift to claim its expansion team in 2008. Philadelphia Union kicked off its inaugural season in 2010 with an away game against the Seattle Sounders. They suffered a loss but bounced back quickly with a home win against D.C. United. The 2011 season was even more rewarding for fans, with a third place finish in the conference and a debut in the MLS Cup Playoffs. In 2014 the team made its first appearance in the U.S. Open Cup. It was a tense match, with the team going all the way to the finals but suffering a heart-breaking defeat in extra time. Philadelphia Union tried again in 2015, this time falling tragically to Sporting Kansas City 6-7 in penalties. In 2018 the team again climbed to the finals but were stopped by the Houston Dynamo.
