About Opry at the Ryman

A landmark building and a historic stage
The venue was originally built as a tabernacle, opened in 1892 as a place to hold revivals. While its main purpose in its early life was as a religious gathering space, the venue had to book engagements as well, causing it to be one of the most popular performance venues in Nashville. The most famous tenant of the auditorium was the Grand Ole Opry, a country music radio show that began attracting a live audience. The Grand Ole Opry radio show first debuted at the Ryman Auditorium in 1943 and ran for thirty years – often to sold out crowds. Once the Grand Ole Opry show moved, Ryan Auditorium fell into disrepair until 1994. In 1998, the Opry performed its first show in over twenty years at the Ryman. Now, Opry at the Ryman is a regular part of the program, a three-month residency every year that relives the glory days of live radio programming on the Ryman stage!
