Striving Towards the Top
Picking up their nickname from the state's historic reliance on the tar industry, North Carolina has shown determination on field, court, and pitch. While each sport has its own legacy, the Tar Heels basketball team has established itself as the jewel in the school's program. The men's basketball team is one of the successful in college sports, having collected half a dozen NCAA Championship titles. But other teams have had their own success. In 2011 the men's soccer team won the College Cup, and the baseball team competed in the College World Series four times in a row from 2006 to 2009. North Carolina has also graduated notable pro athletes, stars like Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, and Mia Hamm. Now, with over forty NCAA championships spread over half a dozen sports, the Tar Heels are a force to be reckoned with. The athletes especially turn up the heat when they're playing one of their rivals, Duke, Virginia, or North Carolina State – no matter what sport it is!
