About NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament

The NCAA Men's Division I National Basketball Tournament is perhaps the craziest, most thrilling, heart-pounding event in all of college sports. Known as the Big Dance or, more appropriately, "March Madness", the NCAA Tournament is a single-elimination contest that features a pool of 68 of the best teams in college basketball fighting desperately to stay alive and reach the championship game and eternal collegiate glory. March Madness is a non-stop thrill ride with several games taking place every day in the early rounds— giants fall, and underdogs rise up to the challenge time and time again. It's basketball's wildest month of the year, and you don't want to miss your chance to be a part of it. Save big on all hotels and flights with CheapTickets! History

The single-elimination game tournament was created in 1939 stemming from the idea had by the then Ohio State University Basketball coach Harold Olsen. The tournament originally consisted of only eight teams competing for the title, a total which was doubled by the 1951 season. As college basketball began to expand around the country, so did the number of teams qualifying for the championship. By 1985 there were 65 teams, and in 2011 three more were added bringing it to today’s total of 68 teams. The tournament didn’t get its famous nickname until 1982 when a Chicago based reporter began using it in his broadcasts of the event. Ever since then, the name March Madness is associated with one of the most popular sporting events in the country.

How it Works

Out of the 68 teams that participate in the tournament, 32 are automatically bid into the tournament based on them being the champions for their respective conferences. The remaining 36 teams are referred to as at-large bids and are chosen by a selection committee. The tournament is set up with four separate brackets representing regions of 16 teams, each ranked by record from 1 to 16. Lower ranked teams are paired up against higher ranked teams, which has earned the tournament's reputation for incredible and unbelievable upsets. Lower-seeded teams have managed to come out ahead of stronger favorites, often in dramatic last-minute victories featuring buzzer-beating shots of desperation.
