A Gospel Song Coming out of Texas
Growing up in Texas, Larry Gatlin and his brothers Steve and Rudy listened to a lot of country and gospel music. Soon they started singing together, performing at church, on the radio, and even on TV. As part of the gospel group The Imperials, Gatlin became friends with Dottie West, who helped him get his foot in the door in Nashville . He released his debut album, The Pilgrim, in 1973, though his sophomore album gained him more attention and a Grammy Award for the song "Broken Lady." In 1979 Steve and Rudy officially joined Larry, the trio releasing Straight Ahead as Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers. Throughout the 1980s they had major success with singles like "All the Gold in California," "What Are We Doin' Lonesome," "Denver," and "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)." In 1992 the band went on a farewell tour, though their departure from the stage was short lived. Two years later they opened a venue in Myrtle Beach, and Larry Gatlin continues to record and tour.
