History

The Georgia Tech football team dates to November 1892 when a group of students decided that the university should have a football program. Early on the team saw very little success, losing their only three games of their inaugural season. The team then known as the Blacksmiths did not have their first recorded win until 1893 when they played the University of Georgia, a game which they won 28-6. Due to the poor sportsmanship on behalf of the Bulldog fans, the game sparked a rivalry that continues today known as the Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. In 1904 Georgia Tech hired coach John Heisman who led the team to 16 consecutive winning seasons. Under the leadership of Heisman, the now Golden Tornados won their first national championship, making them the first southern team to bring home the national title. After Heisman’s retirement in 1919, Georgia Tech replaced the famed coach with William Alexander, former player and assistant coach. From 1920-1944 Alexander led the team to some of their most successful seasons, bringing home several conference titles and undefeated seasons. Following the coaching of Alexander came the Bobby Dodd era, a coach who focused not only on physical play but also player and character development. Under Dodd the Yellow Jackets won three national titles. From the 1960’s to the early 2000’s Georgia Tech’s football program suffered due to coaching and player differences. From 2006 to 2014 the Yellow Jackets have won five division titles, in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2014. In 2019 the Yellow Jackets signed new coach coming from Temple University, Geoff Collins.

Throughout the course of their rich history, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have won 7 national titles (4 are claimed and 3 are unclaimed), as well as 15 conference titles and 5 division titles. Georgia Tech has also played in all four major bowl games several times appearing for the first time at the 1929 Rose Bowl. Alumni of the Yellow Jackets have also been drafted in the National Football League (NFL), with 150 alumni becoming professionals. Two alumni have also been inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame. They play their home games at the Bobby Dodd Stadium located on campus, just outside of downtown Atlanta. They are members of the Coastal division within the Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

Rivals

Perhaps the biggest rival that the Yellow Jackets face during the regular season and occasionally in the post season are the Georgia Bulldogs. This rivalry dates to 1893 when the Yellow Jackets, then known as the Blacksmiths, came out as the underdogs and defeated the Bulldogs 28-6. Every season the two play a game where the winner of the game brings home the Georgia State Governor’s Cup. For many Yellow Jackets fans, this is the most important game of the season and it often brings in some of the largest crowds making the game even more exciting!
