The battles at Knoxville
The Tennessee Volunteers football program is a legacy that stretches back over a century, beginning in 1891. Since their early years, the Volunteers have been a constant threat on the football field, winning several unrecognized national championships in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1933 they moved to the Southeastern Conference, quickly establishing themselves as the team to beat. The 1990s were a period of exceptional success for the Vols, who won back-to-back SEC championships in 1997 and 1998 and also earned the national championship title in 1998. The Vols are a post-season powerhouse, ranking within the top five for most bowl appearances. They've snagged Sugar Bowls, Cotton Bowls, an Orange Bowl, and a Fiesta Bowl. Several of their star athletes have gone on to play in the NFL, including Peyton Manning, Reggie White, and Doug Atkins.
Smokey
The official mascot for the University of Tennessee sports teams is a Bluetick Coonfound named Smokey. The dog leads the team on to the field at Neyland Stadium for every home game. On game weekends, Smokey is cared for by a fraternity on campus. Smokey was selected as the mascot in 1953.
The Third Saturday in October
The rivalry between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Vols dates back to 1901. The game got the name "Third Saturday in October" due to it being played at such date prior to the 1992 season. Tennessee coach Robert Neyland and Alabama's coach Bear Bryant were the driving force in making this a heated rivalry. In the 1950's Alabama's head athletic trainer started handing out victory cigars after a win over the Volunteers. Every year, since 2007 Alabama knowingly violates NCAA rules, but in good faith reports the violation.Neyland Stadium is one of the largest in the country, with seats for over 100,000 fans – but that doesn't mean you should delay in getting your cheap Tennessee Volunteers football tickets!
