A king of country music
Born in North Carolina, Charlie Daniels grew up absorbing country and bluegrass music. By the time he graduated high school, he could already play the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and banjo. His career really started to pick up in Nashville, when he worked as a session musician for artists like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. He broke out on his own in 1971, going on to form the Charlie Daniels Band just a few years later. In 1979 his smash hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" secured him the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance. The song became part of the soundtrack for the movie Urban Cowboy, and Charlie Daniels even had a small cameo in the film. In recent years, Charlie Daniels has been honored for his contributions to country music. In 2008 he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, and eight years later he was invited into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
