Growing up in Athens, Alabama, Michael Anderson jumped into music at a young age. While his family mostly listened to gospel, he yearned for something more. He performed his debut song "Brains" at a talent show when he was just a middle schooler. He moved to Nashville after college, throwing himself into the Southern music scene. His first release was an independent project called Closing Credits for a Fire, after which he started recording as Anderson East. In 2012 he released Flowers of the Broken Heart, a two-disc set that exemplified Anderson East's mastery of rock as well as progressive soul and Americana. His genre-splicing talent attracted the attention of the heavy hitters in the industry, and soon he was signed to Elektra Records. The label released Delilah in 2015, with singles "Satisfy Me" and "Devil in Me" climbing up the Adult Alternative Songs chart.
