About Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines
One of the most notable and intense rivalries in college football history is the one between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines. The two teams first met in 1897, but the rivalry did not gain a lot of interest until the 1970s through the mid-2000s. During this period, the annual matchup often determined the Big Ten Conference title and the Rose Bowl match ups. Many of these games also influenced the outcome of the college football championship.
A History Buckeyes vs Wolverines
When the two teams first met in 1897, the Toledo War was still in the public’s memory. This border war most likely fueled the start of the rivalry between the two opposing teams. This first meeting resulted in a 34-0 win for Michigan, which foretold a long Michigan winning streak. Michigan won or tied every game from 1897-1912.
In 1918 the teams began playing each other annually, kicking the tradition off with another win from Michigan. The following year, Ohio state finally got their first win over Michigan, and won the following two games as well.
Over the next century, the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan would only continue to bloom into one of the greatest college football rivalries of all time. This rivalry has expanded past the fans of college football into popular culture. In the mid-2000s, ESPN aired several commercials that poked fun at the intense rivalry. In 2006, The Daily Show also had a bit that made fun of the rivalry. The following year, HBO released a documentary, Michigan vs Ohio State: The Rivalry that delved deep into how this rivalry came to be.
Currently Ohio State is on an eight-game winning streak, but Michigan still leads the series 58-51-6. With this rivalry anything could happen. Whether the game is played at “The Big House,” Michigan Stadium, or “The Horseshoe,” Ohio Stadium, it will be one you do not want to miss. Grab your tickets today!
Notable Players
Ohio State has seen 480 players drafted into the NFL. Three were number one overall draft picks: Tom Cousineau in 1979, Dan Wilkinson in 1994, and Orlando pace in 1997. Orlando Pace went on to play for the St. Louis Rams and the Chicago Bears.
The Michigan Wolverines can boast about a lengthy list of impressive NFL players who claim Michigan as their alumnus, but the most famous alumna is Tom Brady. While at Michigan, Brady was a solid quarterback who ranked sixth on the Wolverines’ all-time passing yards list but was not a stand-out player. Drafted in the sixth round to be a backup QB for the New England Patriots, no one would have guessed the superstar Brady would go on to become. Six Super Bowl titles later, Tom Brady is now widely considered the greatest quarterback of all time.
