In the early years of the rivalry, the Michigan Wolverines dominated with a record of 23-2-3. In the 1930s, the Michigan State Spartans had four consecutive victories, attempting to turn the tides, but the Wolverines came back strong with the arrival of Fritz Crisler as the new head coach, and won the next 12 games. It was not until the 1950s and 1960s that the Spartans had their most prolonged period of success, with a record of 14-4-2.

The Spartan success did not last long before the Wolverines came back and won 30 of 38 games from 1970 to 2007. The Spartans were determined to put the losing streak to an end when the gained new leadership in head coach Mark Dantonio. From there, the Spartans won seven of eight games from 2008 to 2015. The Michigan Wolverines can boast about a lengthy list of impressive NFL players who claim Michigan as their alumnus, but the most famous alumna is Tom Brady. While at Michigan, Brady was a solid quarterback who ranked sixth on the Wolverines’ all-time passing yards list but was not a stand-out player. Drafted in the sixth round to be a backup QB for the New England Patriots, no one would have guessed the superstar Brady would go on to become.
