About Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers
The history of the rivalry between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers can be traced to 1951, when they first squared off at the Kezar Stadium on November 18. The Cardinals, who at the time played in Chicago, won against San Francisco 27-21 owing to the exceptional Charley Trippi. Trippi was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
In that first clash between the Cardinals and the 49ers, the two sides averaged over five yards per carry as the visiting Cardinals out-rushed the Niners 248-231. This was the 49ers’ second season as part of the NFL.
The First Regular Season Game outside the US
A unique fact which the two rival teams share is that they were the first to play a regular season game outside the US. With more than 103,000 fans, a new NFL attendance record was set at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in 2005. The Cardinals became the first ever NFL team to win outside the country when they defeated the 49ers 31-14.
The Cards Arrive in the Arizona Desert
The debut season of the Phoenix Cardinals had them play a nerve rattling game against San Francisco 49ers at the Sun Devil Stadium on November 6, 1988. This was also the last complete game for Neil Lomax, the second all-time leading passer for the Cardinals.
Trailing 23-17 in the fourth quarter, the Cards fought back against that year’s eventual Super Bowl champions to win with a touchdown at the buzzer to Roy Green. It marks as one of the rivals’ closest games and among the most exciting finishes to have taken place at the Sun Devil Stadium.
Head to Head Record
The Cards and the 49ers were never division rivals during the twentieth century, but since the league realignment in 2002 they became fierce opponents.

The Greats behind the Cardinals and the 49ers
The Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers have produced top-notch players, treating football fans to incredible games.
Charley Trippi’s outstanding performance in the first matchup between the Cards and the 49ers remains unforgettable. Although primarily a running back, Trippi’s versatility allowed him to take on several positions including defensive back, quarterback and punter. As a rookie, he led the Chicago Cardinals to victory in the 1947 NFL Championship Game.
For the Cardinals in recent years, the performance of Larry Fitzgerald calls for much praise, especially when it comes to the encounters with the 49ers. No player in the history of the NFL has more career TD receptions against San Francisco 49ers than Larry Fitzgerald. Overall, he ranks third in all-time receptions, eighth in receiving touchdowns and ninth in receiving yards.
The San Francisco 49ers, on the other hand, also had some exceptional players on their side. Joe Montana, known for his ability to keep his calm under pressure, is remembered for his exceptional performances in the final moments of the 1981 NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl XXII. The touchdown towards the end of the championship game was so popular that fans and sports journalists still refer to the play as The Catch.
While talking about the 49ers greats, you can’t go on without mentioning Patrick L. Willis. The gifted linebacker remained with the San Francisco 49ers throughout his eight-year career in the NFL before he finally called it quits, owing to health reasons. With 950 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 8 interceptions, 55 passes defended and 2 touchdowns, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that he was among the best inside linebackers in the game. His instincts and superb athleticism made him a force to be reckoned with on the field.
