About San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks
In football, hostilities between same division teams come naturally. The two teams can become divisional rivals simply by meeting each other twice a year. The importance of these games is highlighted by the fact that a team’s football season lasts a mere 16 weeks.
The San Francisco 49ers - Seattle Seahawks rivalry started when the latter joined NFC West in 2002. However, it was lackluster until 2011, when both teams hired college rival coaches – Pete Carroll became the Seahawks coach and Jim Harbaugh joined the 49ers. The two were previously coaching USC and Stanford, a long-standing rivalry in college football.
This NFC West rivalry further intensified when 49ers hired Colin Kaepernick as QB and Seahawks hired Russell Wilson for the same position. These young and mobile QBs turned their respective teams into playoff contenders with both the 49ers and the Seahawks taking turns to win the NFC West Championship from 2010 to 2014.
Interestingly, some of the most memorable moments were part of this lackluster rivalry era between the 49ers and the Seahawks.
A few memorable 49ers and Seahawks moments -
When the 49ers showed no respect – October 14, 2002, was a Monday and the 49ers were playing in Seattle. The Seahawks were trailing 10-0 when they pulled a comeback to take a 14-10 lead. In the fourth quarter Jeff Garcia hit Terrell Owens, who outran Shawn Springs for 37 yards, for the game winning TD. Owens then proceeded to pull out a sharpie from his sock, signed the ball and threw it to someone in the crowd wearing a Shawn Springs jersey. This is considered as one of the most disrespectful moments in Seahawks history.
The Biggest Upset – On December 14, 2006, it was pouring in Seattle. The Seahawks were impressive in the beginning and quickly led 7-0. Their offense however stalled later and they were 7-3 when the game went into the fourth quarter. It was a 49ers game after that. 49ers QB Alex Smith threw two TDs and ran one, scoring 21 points. The 49ers won the game 24-14. This game was considered the biggest upset in this NFC West rivalry.
