I have been 2x in colonial, our family loves beach, beautiful sand, snorkeling with fish, huge pools and not being crowded, only pool with bar is usually crowded. It’s nice, beautiful and clean to walk around. Unlike staff is not friendly, pool bar you have to wait for long to get a drink. They don’t pay attention to you. Don’t smile at all. No entertainment in the evenings. Only theater at 9pm that’s all. If you like beach and pool, spending time in water yes it’s for you. Food is so so. Repeatable. No seafood. A la Carte’s are good. You tip them or not they don’t appreciate. We tip them at pool to get drinks but wait still so long. You wave or not they don’t pay attention. If you don’t pay attention for that you will love the resort, beach and enjoy pools.

Nice hotel, good food and very clean amenities. The only thing that would stop me from going back is the lack of activities. Animation was mediocre. From previous experiences at other resorts, the crew engage the guests more in activities and events throughout the day. It would have been nice to have a dj after the show at night for people to stick around and enjoy the rest of the evening. The music at the Jaguar club is not for everyone. I would alao recommend some activities for teenagers.

Barceló Colonial is part of the 3 properties in the Barceló Resort group. The staff is very friendly and service is outstanding. The activities around the pool and at the fitness center are engaging and so much fun! The entertainment at night is good and the food at the buffet restaurants is decent with many options for all tastes, including menus for kids, and with vegetarian options. However, the cleanliness of the rooms is somewhat substandard. As soon as I arrived I asked to be changed to another room because the bathroom tub and mirrors were dirty. The hotel staff right away took care of the issue and I was moved within minutes to a much cleaner room. They even made accommodations for a sleeper-sofa for my younger kid, so everyone could have their own bed. During my stay, the room was cleaned daily, however, soap and towels were not refreshed daily, unless you asked. There's so much to do! From the pools, to the beach, aquatic activities such jet-ski, snorkeling, etc, to escape rooms and go-karts, to discotheque and bowling... the options are many! One thing you can't miss is the dolphins' show. All in all, great experience! Worth the money.

We have been coming here for 15 years. Although the Colonial buildings are starting to show their age, we enjoy being in the center of the resort and were close to everything.

Property ground so well maintained. Beautiful vegetation, super fun water park for kids. Turtles to see. Only wish it was less windy when we visited, water was very murky most of days we were there.

I liked the friendliness of the staff the food choices and the beach was beautiful. The palms on the beach and all around the property made it look like paradise and feel like paradise. Only think I didn't like it that there was no access to any bike in the property or around the property. Great huge property to go biking in and no bikes around. Other than that everything was great.

This was our fourth time at barcelo maya. Lots to do, lots to see, lots to eat, well maintained, friendly staff. I'd like to have more local mexican style foods available at the buffets, but other than that we've always enjoyed ourselves and will be back.

Family of four stayed for 5 days. The resort is made up of 6 resorts side to side. The two at the ends are premium so need to pay extra. If you stay at one of the four in the middle you get to enjoy all four. The place is big and requires lots of walking ( which is good exercise). Pros: Went during low season so not as crowded. The resort was clean and well kept. Swimming pools were big, clean and well maintained. Tip: if one swimming pool is crowded you can always try the other three pools. The beaches are sandy, shallow with some rocks here and there. Tip: wear some crocks or watershoes. Food was good. But I can see it can become boring after 7 days. Tip: one can always walk a bit and try the other buffet restaurants from the adjacent resort. We noticed their menus tend to be different even on the same day. Only tried the Steakhouse restaurant and it was great. Don't know about the other a la carte restaurants. Cons. Check in took a while as other reviews have mentioned. Reason is that they still use mix of computers and pen and paper. Very inefficient. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to process a new guest. The drinks at the swim up bars are very cheap quality. I can not speak about alcoholic drinks since I am not a drinker. But even the usual pops like pepsi were flat most of the time. Tip: get drinks from the nearby grill restaurant fountain machines. Overall: We will come back if a good deal comes along. There are still lots of other resorts to try.
