International flights to Guatemala, from North or Central America, are usually routed through La Aurora International Airport, located about four miles south of downtown Guatemala City, and 16 miles from Antigua. The airport is one of the busiest in Central America, and is being modernized and expanded so that it can now handle more flights and larger planes. Arrivals from North America are processed through the Northern Concourse, while Iberia carrier flights, arriving from Madrid or San Salvador, come through the Central Concourse. The smaller Mundo Maya International Airport, outside the island city of Flores, also services Guatemala flights from Belize. This airport is also being expanded and modernized to handle more passengers and airplane traffic.

Guatemala Weather

December to March is Guatemala’s driest season. This is a very popular time for tourists to plan their Guatemala vacations, so book your accommodations and flights to Guatemala well in advance. The best weather is in December and January, when the surrounding greenery is still lush from the rainy season. The months of May through October bring heavy rainfall to Guatemala. Consider also that the country is wedged between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, so the Caribbean hurricane season hits at around that time, making it inadvisable for tourists to plan Guatemala flights during May - October.

Getting Around Guatemala

The most popular method of getting around Guatemala is the camioneta, known as the chicken bus. Camionetas can get you around most of the country, and form an essential part of any tourist’s experience of Guatemala. Fares are paid to the conductor once you have boarded. Smaller towns are easy to navigate on foot. Guatemala City is serviced by buses and taxis. To access many of the ruins and remote attractions in Guatemala, you will have to hike. Professional tour guides will lead treks that may last several days through well-maintained jungle paths. In addition to hiking, horse-back riding and biking tours can be organized to get to various regional destinations or to get around parks. This is a very scenic and highly recommended way of getting around Guatemala.

Guatemala Attractions

Guatemala is an adventurer’s paradise. Nestled between the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Guatemala is carved into a mountainous and tropical landscape and is rich in culture and attractions:

  • El Mirador, a Mayan city dating back to the 6th century BC that may be the cradle of Mayan civilization.
  • Lago de Atitlán, the deepest lake in Central America, is framed by a ring of volcanoes and often claimed to be the most beautiful lake in the world.
  • Aguateca, the archaeological site in the town of Sayaxche, to which a tourist can take a dugout canoe to see the home to some of the best preserved Mayan ruins in Guatemala.
  • Western Highlands (Los Altos) and the Cuchumatanes Mountains, surrounding the city of Quetzaltenengo, where visitors can explore the breathtaking scenery.
  • Quetzeltenango, with its neoclassical architecture on the Municipal Theater and the Espirito Santo Cathedral and the city’s historical center.
