The Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding is a facility that offers a rare glimpse into the life and habits of these rare creatures. The Chengdu Wuhou Shrine was first built in 302 A.D. to honor Chinese statesman Zhuge Liang and was later rebuilt in 1672.
The Wenshu Monastery covers 12 acres and features five distinct temples of wood and stone construction. It was built in 1691 atop the ruins of an even earlier monastery dating from 420 to 589 A.D. Wangjianglou Park and River Watching Tower rises taller than surrounding buildings and features the famous fountain from the Tang Period of 618 to 907, in addition to an entire grove of bamboo on the premises.
Chengdu is shielded from weather extremes by the Qin Mountains, so even during winter months the average temperature is in the 40s. Precipitation is moderate throughout the year, and summers are pleasant, with warm to hot temperatures between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
