Cheap flights from Buenos Aires to El Calafate
Named in honor of Argentine aviator Jorge Newbery, Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP) is located 15 minutes away from downtown Buenos Aires. This is the main airport for domestic flights, including to El Calafate Airport (FTE).
Flight times to FTE are usually two-and-a-half hours. If you are staying at a hotel, it is likely it offers shuttle service from the airport. Other options include taking a local bus, taxi or renting a car.
Attractions and Tips
Known as the national capital of the glaciers, El Calafate is nestled amongst expansive ice flows and majestic mountain plains. Kick off your Patagonia adventure in the bustling downtown district by savoring local delicacies and exploring the unique handicrafts of indigenous artists.
Your first excursion outside of town begins with a trip to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Located in the Los Glaciares National Park, accessible walking tours are eerily set against a backdrop of roaring ice.
Next, opt for a cruise over Lake Viedma to see Viedma Glacier, the largest in the country. The Petrified Forest of La Leona lies just outside the city. The remnants of a once lush forest are now petrified remains scattering the landscape.
El Calafate's location in the Southern Hemisphere means the summer months are December to March. Rarely does this region get hot and nights are cool regardless of the season. Snow is unusual, but some hotels and other businesses often close for the winter.
