Poised to Reclaim its Legacy

The University of Houston began its men's basketball program only after its women's program, but once the Cougars took to the court in 1945 they made a strong impression. They quickly snagged the Lone Star Conference regular season title and made repeat appearances in the NAIA Tournament. Houston made its NCAA Tournament debut in 1956, just ten years after the program's start. The team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. In the 1960s the Cougars made it all the way to the Final Four twice. But some would argue that it was their 1968 win against the undefeated UCLA Bruins, an event dubbed the "Game of the Century," that was the team's biggest moment of the decade. Then, under the leadership of Coach Guy Lewis, the Cougars made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Finals in 1983 and 1984. In 1983, the team suffered a devastating upset by the NC State Wolfpack, which won with a buzzer-beating dunk. Try as the team might, they couldn't redeem the loss the following year, and the Cougars remained the runner-up to the Georgetown Hoyas.
