History

Syracuse Orange Football got their start in collegiate competition in November of 1889, and early on the team saw their fair share of success quickly making their way to the top. From the 1890s well through the early 1900s the team rose to national prominence thanks to the help of Frank O’Neil, who would eventually go on to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Through the 1920s the Orange saw two players to their roster become All American athletes, both of whom went on to become members of the College Football Hall of Fame as well as the College Basketball Hall of Fame. In the 1930s Syracuse became one of the first collegiate programs alongside Cornell University to offer an African-American a scholarship as a starting player for the team. Wilmeth Sidat-Singh would lead the Orange through several victories, helping break the longstanding barrier. The 1930s and 1940s proved to be a struggle for the Orange, as they had lost many of their players off to the second World War. In 1949 Ben Schwartzwalder became the head coach of the Orange and shortly after they made their first bowl appearance. In a matter of three years the Orange had competed in three bowl games including two Orange Bowls and one Cotton Bowl. Under the leadership of Schwartzwalder, the Orange had twenty-two years of winning seasons straight, played in seven bowl games, and even won the national championship game in 1959.

From 1974-1980 the Orange saw a period of defeat under the leadership of Frank Maloney. Often criticized for his failure at keeping the team nationally prominent, Maloney resigned shortly after the Orange moved to their permanent home, the Carrier Dome. After what seemed like another dismal few seasons, new head coach Dick MacPherson brought the Orange back to the limelight with several winning seasons before he left to be the head coach of the New England Patriots. Under the leadership of Paul Pasqualoni the Orange appeared in 11 bowl games, bringing home 9 of the wins and they also secured three Big East championship titles. The early 2000s were a rough bout for the Orange, by 2010 they had finished their first winning season since 2001. Currently Dino Babers is the head coach of the Orange and is looking to carry on the legacy of the team to another generation.

The Syracuse Orange, also known as the Orangemen play within the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference within the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. Located in Syracuse, NY the Orange play all of their home games at the notorious Carrier Dome. While they have only brought home one NCAA National Championship title, they are one of the most successful teams in collegiate football. Several Orangemen went on to play professionally within the NFL for teams such as the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Rivals

Syracuse Orange football claims to have rivalries with five other collegiate teams. They include; Boston College Eagles, Pittsburgh Panthers, West Virginia Mountaineers, Penn State Nittany Lions, and the Colgate Red Raiders. The rivalry with the Panthers dates to 1916, with the two teams sharing the same conference for most of their existence. The two have played each other annually since 1955 as they are both members of the ACC. Boston College is also another major rival of the Orange, with this dating back to 1924. The two began playing annually in 1961, however after the Orange left the Big East they saw a few seasons of no match ups. In 2013 when the Orange became members of the ACC the rivalry kicked back into full gear, with the teams playing a single game every season. The rivalry that perhaps holds the most weight for the Orangemen is the one with the Mountaineers. Every season the two play a game where the winner gets to take home the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy. As a player for the Mountaineers but former coach of the Orange, the trophy holds extra significance for both teams. Making this game between the two one that you do not want to miss. Seeing the Orange play against any of their top rivals is going to be an experience that you will never forget!
