The Warriors Of The Big Ten
Purdue's basketball program got its start back in 1896, winning its first Big Ten championship title in 1911. It was just the start of Purdue's dominant role in the conference. Under Coach Ward "Piggy" Lambert, the Boilermakers racked up eleven Big Ten Championships. In 1969 they made their debut in the NCAA Tournament Finals game, where they were beaten by former Purdue player John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins. Matt Painter came into the picture as head coach in 2005, and has maintained Purdue's legacy of success. Since his arrival, the Boilermakers have made the NCAA tournament almost every year. Since the 1980s, they have been a dangerous threat in the NCAA Tournament, making it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in 2017 before falling to Kansas. Purdue's most natural rival are the Indiana University Hoosiers. The entire state of Indiana has basketball mania, so it's only natural that Purdue and Indiana University have developed a deep rivalry.
