Founded in 1890, the Kansas Jayhawks program is a legacy in college sports. The young team, one of the first in the nation, started off in a blaze of glory with four undefeated seasons in its early years. In 1968 the Jayhawks secured the Big Eight Conference title and an Orange Bowl appearance under the leadership of Coach Pepper Rodgers. The 1970s were exciting years for the team, as Coach Bud Moore was dubbed Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1975 and the Jayhawks soundly defeated the eventual national champion Oklahoma, 23-3. The program reached new heights with Coach Mark Mangino, who brought the Jayhawks to the Tangerine Bowl in 2003, the first of several bowl appearances. Mangino's passionate approach infused the Jayhawks program with new energy, even cranking up the Kansas-Kansas State rivalry games.
