A Roster Full of Future Superstars

The basketball program at Syracuse University got started at the end of the nineteenth century, with the first varsity team making its appearance in 1916. Throughout its early years, the program had to work hard to climb up the ranks of college teams. In 1957 the Syracuse Orange players made their NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament debut. The team's prominence rose in the 1960s with on-court leadership from Dave Bing. Coach Roy Danforth took the team to the NIT and brought them all the way to the 1975 Final Four. In 1979 Syracuse was one of the founding members of the Big East Conference, along with their future rival Georgetown University. The 1980s saw a strengthening of the program with the spectacular athletics of Dwayne "Pearl" Washington, who is a legend at Syracuse even following his tragic death from brain cancer. The 2002-2003 season was one of unanticipated triumph for Syracuse, as they went from being unranked to clinching the NCAA Championship, led in part by future NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony.
