First class in football
The Yale football program kicked off in 1872 and immediately became a dominant force. Led by the "Father of American Football," Walter Camp, the program helped define the game. Between its inaugural season and 1909, the Bulldogs won 26 college football national championships. The second and third Heisman Trophy winners were both Yale Bulldogs, Larry Kelley in 1936 and Clint Frank in 1937. In 1956 Yale joined the Ivy League Conference, intensifying the rivalries it had been building with Princeton and Harvard. The Yale-Princeton rivalry is the oldest in all of college football, and early Yale-Harvard games helped establish the rules of college ball. Recently, Yale has made a comeback in football. In 2016 Yale finally broke Harvard's nine-game victory streak in their rivalry, and the following year Yale snagged the conference championship, the first time in over a decade.
