Richard Strauss served as a co-director of the Vienna State Opera until 1924. He wanted to revive ballet after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He hired a choregrapher named Heinrich Kroller who collaborated with him on a series of productions. Whipped Cream, then known as Schlagobers.
Inside a Viennese cake shop, a group of children are celebrating their Christian confirmations. After overindulging, one of the boys falls into delirium and hallucinates. Dancing confections, marching marzipans and cha-chaing cheesecakes will liven the stage. Prepare for the party of Princess Pralinee!
The the choreography has been altered from Krollers original plans, sketches of more than 280 costumes and sets created by the original house designers still remain intact. The extravagance of its production led to the ballet earning its "billionaire's ballet" nickname. In a time of hyperinflation and food-shortages, the reception of the ballet was troubled. But Strauss states that "[He] cannot bear the tragedy of the present time. I want to create joy."
