A fusion of influences

Born to Nigerian parents, Olubowale Victor Akintimehin grew up in and around Washington, D.C., absorbing the influence of go-go music. His single "Dig Dug (Shake It)" became a fan favorite on local radio, and his first mixtape, Paint a Picture, came out shortly after. By this time, Wale was starting to get the attention of the rest of the nation. In 2008 he was courted by several big-name companies, and the following year he released his first major label mixtape. His debut album, Attention Deficit, featured artists like Lady Gaga, Gucci Mane, and Pharrell. His fan base grew so large that the release of his sophomore album, Ambition, crashed the site Hulkshare after five seconds. His 2015 record, The Album About Nothing, garnered him a BET Hip Hop Award nomination for Album of the Year.
