About Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me
Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! is a popular weekly hour-long quiz program on NPR. The show started in 1998 in Chicago. Every week, listeners tune in so they can test their knowledge against celebrities. Players have to figure out whether the news is real or fake. The radio show quickly became one of the most popular programs listeners of public radio were allowed to participate in, interacting with some of their favorite stars as well. The show also has a website where players at home can join in. Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! has also toured the country as a stage show.
History
Over 700 NPR Member stations carry the current events quiz show. Wait Wait was also one of NPR’s first podcasts, which garnered it even more fans. Audiences ranked it as one of the top 20 podcasts in the U.S. Hosted by playwright and actor Peter Segal, the show has featured many guests hosts in its 20 plus years. Guest hosts have included Tom Hanks, Tom Bodett, Drew Carey, and more. The show’s first official judge and scorekeeper was Carl Kasell; Kasell retired in 2014, and the role was taken over by Bill Kurtis. Listeners call or email the show to nominate themselves as contestants. Each show, producers select and contact several listeners and ask them to participate in a variety of featured games.
Touring
The show celebrated its 20th anniversary by touring the United States. The shows featured hosts Peter Sagal and Bill Kurtis along with a roster of panelists. The show brought its signature news-comedy to venues across the country.
