History of the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks were founded in 1945 and played within the Pacific Coast Hockey League. It was not until 1970 that they joined the National Hockey League as an expansion team. The team did not make their first playoff appearance until the 1974-1975 season; however, they were eliminated during the Quarterfinals by the Montreal Canadiens. Out of their twenty-seven playoff appearances, they have only made it to the finals three times. Losing out to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994, and the Boston Bruins in 2011. Although the Canucks have not won the Stanley Cup they do have three Conference Championships, two Presidents’ Trophies and ten Division Championships.

The Vancouver Canucks Arena

Rogers Arena, formerly known as General Motors Place, is where the Canucks play all their home games. The arena is in downtown Vancouver and was opened in 1995. It became the replacement arena for the team, as they no longer played out of their original home arena the Pacific Coliseum. The arena is mainly known for housing the Vancouver Canucks as well as hosting the ice hockey games in the 2010 Winter Olympics. They do however host other concerts and sporting events.

Rivalries

The Canucks have two main rivals, the Calgary Flames and the Chicago Blackhawks. Between the Flames and Canucks, the rivalry has everything to do with playing in the same division ever since they were realigned in 1982. The rivalry with the Blackhawks started back in 1974 when the two were in the same division fighting for the top seed. It continued into present day with the two facing off in three seasons worth of playoff series. However, because the Canucks have been struggling on the ice more recently, this rivalry is not as hot as it once was.
