About New York Islanders
Few events compare to the intensity that a live hockey game brings to the crowd. That is why a New York Islanders game is the one event that you do not want to miss. You can get your cheap Islanders tickets here to see the team’s powerhouse players live and in action!
Out of the Gate Success
The Islanders were founded in 1972 as a part of the NHL’s maneuvers to keep a team from the rival league- World Hockey Association (WHA), back when it was still in effect. After two years of building the team’s roster, they found almost instant success by securing fourteen straight playoff appearances after their third season. Continuing their success, the Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, and nineteen consecutive playoff series wins between 1980 and 1984: a feat that remains unparalleled in the history of professional sports. Historic players such as Al Arbour, Mike Bossy, Pat La Fontaine, Clark Gillies, Denis Potvin, and many more have helped build up the team to their current glory.
Dethroning a Dynasty
After appearing in their fifth Stanley Cup Finals in seven years, the Islanders were dethroned as champions by the Edmonton Oilers. With their victory the Oilers not only dethroned the dynasty that had been created, but they also broke the nineteen consecutive playoff series wins that the Islanders had fostered. Throughout the rest of the 1980s the Islanders remained competitive, but as members of the Cup bearing teams began to leave, they saw a fading in their performance, slowly slipping down in the standings. As time went on the team began to see some hardship, with many of their star players becoming injured in unlikely ways. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s the Islanders struggled to make it to the playoffs, with their first appearance in many years happening in 2002.
The Tavares Era
In 2009 the Islanders announced that they were going to begin rebuilding their struggling team as an effort to get young talent on the ice once again. In the 2009 draft they chose center John Tavares. Early on Tavares struggled to find his footing in the league, but by the 2011-2012 season he was named the Alternative Captain and he had his best season to date. Under the leadership of Tavares the Islanders became a competitive team once again, appearing in several post season games. In the 2018 offseason Tavares announced that he would not be resigning with the Islanders and he would sign with the Maple Leafs.
After former captain John Tavares left the team in 2018, new faces emerged as leaders on the ice. Mathew Barzal, Valtteri Filppula and Anders Lee all became instrumental players for the Islanders success. In the 2018-2019 season many around the league anticipated that the Islanders would finish at the bottom of the standings without their star player. However, under the leadership of Barry Trotz the Islanders made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, getting eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes. With some big off season moves fans are eager to see what the Islanders will bring to the ice this season!
Must-See Matchups
Entering the league as strongly as they did, it was only natural that the Islanders quickly found themselves having rivalries with some of the top names in the league. Among the rivals include the New York Rangers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The rivalries with the Capitals and the Penguins stem from the teams meeting several times during the post season when the Islanders were at the height of their success. More recently the rivalry with the Capitals has heightened as the former coach of the Capitals began working for the Islanders in the 2018-2019 season. No matter who the rival is, the Islanders are sure to put on a show for all fans!
New York Islanders vs New York Rangers
The rivalry with the Rangers stems to the two both playing within the city of New York. Often coined as the “Battle of New York”, the two face off several times within the regular season as the two play within the same conference and the same division. The rivalry between the two did not reach significance until the Islanders won their four Stanley Cups early on in, posing a threat to the already dominating Rangers. This New York rivalry is not just apparent in the NHL, it can also be seen in the NBA with the Nets and Knicks, the MLB with the Yankees and Mets, and in the NFL with the Jets and Giants.
New York Islanders vs Toronto Maple Leafs
While many do not expect the Toronto Maple Leafs to be a main rival of the New York Islanders, they have been tugging at each other’s strings since the Islanders entered the league in 1972. Very early on the two faced off against each other in the post season, planting the seed for their rivalry. As the Islanders became more successful throughout the 1980’s, their rivalry with the Maple Leafs only intensified. As the Islanders success dwindled down, so did their rivalry as they do not play much within the regular season. The heat between the two came back when the star center man for the Islanders, Johnathan Tavares signed with the Maple Leafs in 2018. Today any game between the Islanders and the Maple Leafs is one that you do not want to miss!
If they are not already, you will find that attending one Islanders game will make you a fan for life! Don’t wait to get your cheap New York Islanders tickets- you do not want to miss out on this incredible experience.
