The Track to Mainstream Success
After the fall of his cover band, Pat Monahan moved to San Francisco where he met Rob Hotchkiss. The two quickly began performing together and not long after decided to form a full band. They had recruited two guitarists and a drummer, and by 1994 the band Train was formed. After failing to get signed by a record label, the band released their own self-titled CD independently. A year later they were touring nationally as openers for bands such as Counting Crows and Hootie & the Blowfish. The band released their first self-produced album in February of 1998 with hit singles “Free”, “Meet Virginia” and “I Am” making the charts. Launching the band to national fame, the album soon became certified platinum. Their second album was released in March of 2001, with the number one single “Drops of Jupiter” becoming a massive hit. The single spent over a year on the Hot 100 charts before it was moved off to a recurring chart. The single also won the band two Grammy Awards and helped the album become the band’s first multi-platinum album. From there Train continued their success with such chart-topping songs as "Calling All Angels," "Hey, Soul Sister," and "Marry Me." Their catchy and heartfelt songs are often used in TV shows and movies, including "One Tree Hill" and "Spider-Man 2."
