A Rocky Start
Tito Ortiz was born as Jacob Ortiz on January 23, 1975 in Huntington Beach, California. Growing up, Ortiz had a very rough upbringing, with both of his parents addicted to drugs. From a young age he began getting in street fights and getting involved with local gangs, resulting in him spending most of his youth in and out of juvenile detention centers. When Ortiz got into high school he began participating on the wrestling team, eventually becoming a star on the team. After he graduated high school, Ortiz was kicked out of home and became addicted to drugs. It was not until he ran into his former high school wrestling coach that he decided to get his life on track and join the wrestling team at Golden West College. Throughout his collegiate career he trained alongside UFC fighter Tank Abbott. In 1997, Ortiz entered the UFC world as an amateur, competing under no contract and receiving no prize money. He won his first fight against Wes Albritton. In his early years as a fighter he not only saw many big wins, but he also saw some devastating losses. In early 2005 he announced that he would be taking a break from the UFC, a break that did not last long though with his return in 2006. In 2008 after a frustrating two years, Ortiz announced that he would not be resigning his contract due to irreconcilable differences with the UFC president. Ortiz once again came back to the UFC in 2009 and signed a six-fight contract. After losing the first four fights of his contract, Ortiz’s career in the UFC was on the line once again. In his fifth fight against Ryan Bedder, Ortiz had won his first victory since 2006. Once his contract was up, Ortiz had announced that he would be retiring from the UFC. During his retirement from the UFC he picked up competing in the Mixed Martial Arts league Bellator MMA. He fought his last fight with Bellator in 2017, and months later he announced that he would be making his third comeback to the UFC.
