Tierra Whack is an American rapper who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 11, 1995. She is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Originally she performed under the name "Dizzle Dizz" as a teenager but later reverted to her birth name. Her debut album was called Whack World and it received widespread critical acclaim. The single “Mumbo Jumbo” was released in 2017 and was nominated for a 2019 Grammy for Best Music Video.

Early Life and Career

Tierra Whack was raised by her mother; she has two younger siblings. Whack says she was an introverted child and writing helped her deal with her insecurities. As a young child, she loved Dr. Seuss so much that she would rhyme her sentences in her homework assignments. Whack first attended The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, where she was a vocal major, but then finished high school inAtlanta, Georgia. At Benjamin Rush, Whack and her friends performed the finale number from Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit for the school’s vocal showcase. Later, during Whack's career, she toured with Lauryn Hill, who starred in Sister Act 2. At age 15, Whack appeared in a video produced by Philadelphia's underground music collective We Run the Streets. As Dizzle Dizz, Whack released a number of tracks. She struggled with depression soon after, and she and her mother moved to Atlanta where Whack finished high school and began to record her own music. Whack moved back to Philadelphia in 2015 and reconnected with sound engineer and music producer, Kenete Simms. She signed with Interscope Records in 2017. Later in 2017, she released the track "Mumbo Jumbo” and toured with Flying Lotus. Her fifteen-track debut album was entitled Whack World; it was released in 2018. It received a “Best New Music” accolade from Pitchfork. Critics lauded the fact that the tracks were mostly one minute in length. Whack was able to release each short track on Instagram, along with short films. The project was highly acclaimed by music critics and fans alike.
