The Kooks got their start in the UK, half as an idle distraction and half as a spark of true musical ambition. Their demo EP created significant buzz in the British music industry, and in 2005 they signed with Virgin Records. They cut their teeth on tour with The Thrills before recording their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out. When Max Rafferty, the bassist, was let go, the future of the band seemed uncertain. But later that year Konk was released featuring the radio hit "Always Where I Need to Be." In 2011 Junk of the Heart gave The Kooks a more modern edge, and three years later Listen evolved the band's sound with daring improvisation.
