Started in 1978 in Los Angeles, the Go-Go's were all-female punk band, standing out in a sea of angsty male groups. Throughout their early years, the line up shifted – as did the band's sound, moving more towards power pop. The Go-Go's shocked the nation with their debut album, Beauty and the Beat. It ran right up the charts and eventually secured triple platinum status. Inner turmoil broke up the band in 1985. The members of the band pursued successful solo careers, with Belinda Carlisle releasing hit singles like "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and "Mad About You." Throughout the 1990s the Go-Go's would make the rare special appearance, and in 1999 the band reunited. They released their first album of new material in more than fifteen years, God Bless the Go-Go's, in 2001.
