About Supercross
The American Motorcyclist Association's Supercross Championship pits some of the greatest bikers in the world against one another in a series of races packed with obstacles and jumps. Founded in 1974, the AMA Supercross has largely remained true to its original form, with in-door, artificial dirt tracks built within professional sporting stadiums acting as the setting each year. Supercross is among the most exciting competitions in the dirt biking and motorcycling sports community, and even replaced the Grand Prix World Championship as the most respected event of the year in motocross. The competitions generally include 38 riders, and are considered to be a bit more dangerous and death-defying than motocross. With dirt instead of natural grass and far larger, more exciting jumps, Supercross is the undisputed crown jewel of the motorcycle sport world.
Memorable moments
In 1997, legend Brian Deegan was crowned champion after "ghostriding" his bike on a jump during the freestyle competition. Another historic moment in Supercross came when Bob Hannah - an early giant of the sport - won his third title in four years in 1979. More recently, Ryan Villopoto won his first championship in his home state of Washington in 2009, propelling him to the top of the sport throughout the years that followed. Furthermore, in 1999, Larry Ward won the championship for the first time in eight years, at the Seattle Mariner's Kingdome stadium days before it was demolished.
Crazy atmosphere
This cemented the sport's stature in the state and the sporting world. This event is generally held in stadiums with gas-powered, motorized vehicles traveling at great speeds and conquering massive jumps, making for a somewhat loud environment. You will hear the sounds of the crowd ""ooh'ing"" and ""ahh'ing"" as the athletes defy gravity. Supercross is a terrific event for the whole family. If you are bringing younger children, consider bringing some ear plugs along. Is there anything more exhilarating than watching professional cyclists race across tumultuous tracks at breathtaking speeds? Most likely not! The AMA Supercross World Championship finals generally take place between January and April each year, traveling from stadium to stadium across North America.
