An Underground Success

Stereolab was formed in 1990 after the band McCarthy had broken up. Coming from Essex, England Tim Gane formed the band with then girlfriend Laetitia Sadier, bassist Martin Kean and vocalist Gina Morris. Early on the band had created their own record label called Duophonic Super 45s, which they would use to release their first EP Super 45. Self-producing the music as well as any marketing materials used to promote the EP had empowered the band and helped them learn more about the industry. In 1992 the band released their first full length album under an independent label entitled Peng!. As time went on the band would expand adding and subtracting members regularly. In 1993 they released another EP Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, with a new sound it captured the attention of the American record label Elektra Records. Later that year they released their first album under Elektra entitled Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements. Although it didn’t have mainstream success, the band would see a massive underground success rate in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The band wouldn’t see any critical success until they released their fourth album Emperor Tomato Ketchup. With its alternative rock sound, the album quickly became popular on college campuses. Throughout the early and mid-2000’s the band would continue to release music, none of which would launch them to the international stardom that they dreamed of. In 2008 the band took a hiatus, stopping all their live performances.

A Return to the Stage

In the fall of 2018 the band was announced as a performer at the 2019 Primavera Sound Festival, marking it as their first performance since they began their hiatus back in 2008. Following this announcement, the band reissued their album Switched On, as well an announcement that they would be doing a reissuing series throughout 2019. Performing remastered versions of all their hits, Stereolab will be embarking on their first tour in over a decade across the United States and Europe with stops in Dallas, Toronto, Seattle and El Paso!
