One of Baseball’s Oldest

Originally located New York City, the Giants were founded in 1883 under the name New York Gothams. Entering the league as members of the National League, they saw success early on in franchise history. In 1888 they won their first National League Pennant and went on to win the championship game, not considered as a World Series victory as this was pre-modern-era World Series. Also, early on in their history they changed their name from the Gothams to the Giants, after their manager exclaimed “My big fellows! My giants!” after a very satisfactory win against the Philadelphia Phillies. While in New York the Giants won seventeen National League Pennants and five World Series titles. Their first appearance came in 1905, where they won the series in four games against the Philadelphia Athletics.

In 1958 the Giants made the move to San Francisco, where they’ve developed one of the most die-hard fanbases in all of sports. While in New York the Giants proved to be very successful in the post season, something that did not translate when they moved to San Francisco. While it only took them four years to gain another National League pennant, it took them nearly sixty years before they earned another World Series title. Once they were able to get in a groove, the Giants won three World Series titles in four seasons in 2010, 2012, and 2014. The title in 2014 came as a surprise to many as the Giants were entered as the Wild Card for the National League and were not expected to make it far. They ended up facing off with the other Wild Card contender the Kansas City Royals and nearly defeating them in game seven. More recently, the Giants have been in a bit of a rut. With their last big win in 2014, the Giants are hungry to add another World Series title to their collection.

Oracle Park

Throughout franchise history, the Giants have called many venues their home. Their original venue the Polo Grounds in New York City, then Seals Stadium in San Francisco, and finally now Oracle Park. Formerly known as AT&T Park, the Giants have played all their home games here since the 2000 season opener. The park sits adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, giving fans the view of the water from their seats. According to experts, Oracle Park is one of the friendliest parks for a pitcher. The outfield is one of the largest in the National League, making it very difficult for a batter to hit a home run. The park has the option of luxury suites, club level seating as well as club seating located behind Homeplate! A major feature of the park that surely cannot be missed is the 80-foot long Coca-Cola bottle behind the left field bleachers. Popular among children as well as adults, the Coke bottle features playground slides that light up every time the Giants score a homerun. For fans who love to use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to publish their memories check out the @Cafe located behind the centerfield bleachers! The café serves freshly brewed coffee and provides large screen televisions with a live feed of fan’s social media posts.

Rivalries

Perhaps the longest-standing rivalries in all of sports, the Giants and Dodgers have been at each other’s throats since they were playing in New York. With the Dodgers playing in Brooklyn and the Giants in Manhattan, it was only natural that the two formed a hatred for each other. When the Dodgers proposed the move to California to the Giants it only strengthened the rivalry. Who comes out on top with this rivalry is often widely debated, as the Giants have more overall wins and World Series Titles.

Another rival of the Giants are the Oakland Athletics. This rivalry stems back to the Athletics playing in Philadelphia and losing out the Giants in the 1905 World Series. When the Athletics relocated to Oakland, the two began facing off head to head again. Series between the two are often referred to as the “Battle of the Bay”.
