About Colorado Rockies vs. San Francisco Giants
For many Colorado Rockies fans, it is the San Francisco Giants who are their biggest nemesis. Both these sides play in the West Division of the National League and that is the only thing that they have in common. The Rockies were formed in 1993 whereas the Giants joined the baseball landscape all the way back in 1883. The series results have been very close between these two teams. Will the latest MLB season follow the same pattern? Or will one of these two teams dominate the other? These and all other questions will be answered this year.
A budding rivalry
The Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants took on each other for the first time on May 10, 1993. The game was played at Mile High Stadium in Colorado, home of the Rockies for their first season. The Rockies won the encounter 7-4 to post their first win over the Giants. Overall during that season, the Rockies and the Giants faced off on 13 occasions. Rockies won 3 of those games whereas the Giants came out on top on 10 occasions. There have been some memorable moments between these two teams over the years.
Buster Posey Setting Records - Buster Posey hit his 100th homerun at the Coors Field. Then on September 27, 2016, Posey smashed his 1000th hit at the AT&T Park.
SpillySlam -August 24, 2009 saw the Rockies take on the Giants at the Coors Field. The game went on for fourteen innings and ended just short of five hours. The Giants scored three runs on top of the 14th to lead 4-1. Then with the bases loaded, Ryan Spilborghs hit the first grand slam ever in the franchise’s history to help the Rockies record a 6-4 win. The game is now known as SpillySlam.
Rockies-Giants Head-To-Head
The Colorado Rockies have played the San Francisco Giants more than four hundred times and this is how they have fared over the years:
Games Played | Wins | Losses | Win %age | Home Wins-Losses | Away Wins-Losses |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
402 | 181 | 221 | .450 | 107-92 | 74-129 |

The Greats on Both Sides
Every team has stalwarts that put their team on the map. The Colorado Rockies have had players like Todd Helton, Larry Walker and Troy Tulowitzki. Even though, they could not help the Rockies win the World Series, they have still played their part in making the Rockies a formidable unit. The San Francisco Giants have won eight World Series titles and they could not have done it without some serious star power. Icons like Willie Mays, Bill Terry and Christy Mathewson are all World Series winners and they stepped up to the plate to be counted whenever the Giants needed them the most.
