The rise and fall of Beatlemania
Born Richard Starkey in Dingle, the rock idol had a difficult childhood. His interest in drumming started when he joined a hospital band while recovering from tuberculosis. Ringo Starr was involved in several bands before John Lennon invited him to be part of the Beatles in 1962. By the end of the next year, the Beatles were a full-blown cultural phenomenon. Ringo also sang lead vocals in a few of the Beatles' biggest hits, including "Yellow Submarine." As the years passed, Ringo started to feel alienated from the rest of the band. Soon, the Beatles fell apart.

Success as a solo artist
Ringo Starr struck out on a solo career while at the same time working with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and George Harrison on their respective projects. Ringo had solo hits like "You're Sixteen," "Photograph," and "Oh My My." In 1989, following rehab for his alcoholism, he founded Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. Starr is one of the few artists who has two spots in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one for his part in the Beatles and another for his solo career.
