From dorm room jamming to world tours
The Pixies got their start in a university dorm room when Joey Santiago and Black Francis started jamming together. After recruiting Kim Deal to play bass and David Lovering as a drummer, the Pixies were born. They started working the local Boston circuit before signing with the label 4AD. They released their debut mini-LP, Come on Pilgrim, in 1987. Their follow-up album, Surfer Rosa, got their foot in the door in Europe. Despite their growing popularity, the band suffered from exhaustion and internal tensions, and in 1993 Black Francis declared an end to the Pixies. Rock fans began to realize the genius of the Pixies following the breakup, so that when the group announced their reunion in 2004, Pixies concerts quickly sold out. However, it was a decade before they released a new album. Following the departure of Deal and the addition of Paz Lenchantin to replace her, the band released Indie Cindy.
