A Game of Stars
The NFL Pro Bowl was started in 1951, and it was traditionally held between the teams of the American Football Conference and the teams of the National Football Conference. The format is very similar to many other professional sports all-star games. They take top players from each league to face off against each other, NFC vs. AFC. From 2014-2017 the league experimented with a new format involving two captains picking players for their teams “schoolyard” style. After major upset from fans, coaches, and players the league reverted to the original format for the 2017 Pro Bowl game. Traditionally the game is played the weekend before the Super Bowl, with the two teams participating in the disqualified from playing. Unlike many other All-Star games, the NFL decided to put the game at the end of the season to protect players from potentially injuring themselves and having to sit out the remainder of the season. The NFL Pro Bowl is usually held in a spectacular location, including the Superdome in New Orleans, Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Polo Grounds in New York, and Wrigley Field in Chicago, to name a few.
Originally, the players that got to play in the Pro Bowl were determined by other players as well as coaching staff. In 1995 the league implemented the option for fans to vote in who they wanted to see play at the game. The league also selects replacements in the event that a player that was originally voted in for some reason can’t play. The coaching staff for the game is determined by the team with the best record that got eliminated during the Divisional Playoff Round.
