A superstar side project becomes a main act
Pharrell Williams, Shay Haley, and Chad Hugo began collaborating as friends in high school, unaware of their superstar futures. In 1999 they started N.E.R.D., a funk rock band, as a side project. They released In Search Of... first in Europe, followed by a re-release recorded with Spymob. By the time N.E.R.D. released Fly or Die in 2004, the group's popularity had snowballed. They were so involved in the band that they recorded their third album independently after their contract with Virgin Records ended. They toured with Kanye West and Linkin Park and performed sensational sets at festivals around the world. Since the 2010 release of Nothing, the group has been mostly silent, until 2017 when rumors of a new album started circulating. That November N.E.R.D. released "Lemon" featuring Rihanna, heralding the album No One Ever Really Dies. The record includes appearances from other superstars, including Future, Kendrick Lamar, M.I.A., and Ed Sheeran.
