Franchise History
The Minnesota Wild were founded in 1997 and began playing in the 2000-2001 season, making them a relatively new team in the NHL. Based at the Xcel Energy Center, the Wild are the only Minneapolis-Saint Paul sports team to be based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. In their first few seasons in the league, the Wild performed just about how everyone expected them to, at the bottom of the standings. Throughout their struggles the young team showed a lot of promise which came to fruition in the 2002-2003 season when they made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals defeating the Colorado Avalanche and the Vancouver Canucks. Despite making it to the Western Conference Finals, they were swept by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in four games. The Wild would not make another appearance in the playoffs until 2007, when they got eliminated from the first round by Anaheim once again. In 2008, the dream of hoisting the Stanley Cup became much more of a reality when the Wild clinched the division championship. In the first round of the playoffs they faced off against the Colorado Avalanche, who eliminated the Wild in six games.
After a disappointing finish to their 2008 season, the Minnesota Wild went through a period of rebuilding. Shifting the roster and coaching staff around proved to be somewhat helpful for the Wild, as they reached the playoffs once again in 2013. In recent years, the Wild have remained competitive in the league, but have never been able to capitalize in the post season. Despite their rookie status in the NHL, the Wild has successfully faced up against legends in the league, and even made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs several times. Despite their current lack of Stanley Cups, fans are confident that the Wild will achieve their victory in the very near future.
Exceptional players like Eric Staal, Mats Zuccarello, and current captain, Mikko Koivu have all contributed greatly to the team, and are a wonder to see in person. With a newer team, there’s an energy and motivation that is sometimes missing from even the most established teams. With some big moves made in the offseason, fans are eager to see what the Wild are capable of on the ice this upcoming season!
Minnesota Wild vs Chicago Blackhawks
The rivalry between the Minnesota Wild and the Chicago Blackhawks dates to when the Minnesota North Stars played in the league. Although this rivalry was disintegrated in 1993 when the team relocated, it picked right back up when the Wild started play. The rivalry began to heat back up when the Wild and Blackhawks faced off for the first time in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Since then the two have met in the post season twice, with the Blackhawks winning all the series. The rivalry even caught the attention of the league in 2016 when they announced the two would be playing in the Stadium Series against each other that year at TCF Bank Stadium. Today the two both play within the Central Division, meaning that there are plenty of Wild vs Blackhawks games to see!
