From dorm rooms to award shows

MGMT has humble beginnings, getting its start on the campus of Wesleyan University. Students Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden had found a musical kinship, eventually starting a band together. Their music caught the ear of Columbia Records, which signed them in 2006. The following year MGMT released Oracular Spectacular, their single "Kids" snagging them their first Grammy Award. Now a five-piece band, MGMT began opening for juggernauts like Radiohead, M.I.A., and Beck. Publications like Rolling Stone and Spin lauded them as a rising talent, further expanding the band's fan base. In 2010 MGMT sold out the fabled Red Rocks Amphitheatre and performed to almost 10,000 fans. They became a festival sensation, taking the stage at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Glastonbury. Fans got a shock in 2014 when the band announced a hiatus, but three years later MGMT started releasing singles from their long-awaited fourth album, the first new record in five years.
