About Mavis Staples
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 10, 1939, Mavis Staples was raised primarily by her music-loving father in the city of her birth. When Staples was just eight years old, her father created a family band consisting of her and her siblings. The band soon began to play at their local church, and although they were all loved by the local community, it was Mavis who stole the show with her commanding stage presence and incredible singing voice. She subsequently rose up past her older siblings to become the lead singer of the group, aptly named the Staple Singers. A star was born.
The breakout
After several single releases in the early 1950s, including "Sit Down Servant" and
"These They Are," the Staple Singers achieved national recognition after the release of the single "Uncloudy Day" in 1957.
People were shocked by teenage Mavis' impressive vocal abilities, and subsequently a loyal following began to form, with
many fans rushing to get cheap tickets whenever possible. The Staple Singers subsequently embarked on a nationwide tour,
consolidating their fan base along the way. Two more successful singles followed to close out the 1950s: "This May Be the
Last Time" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."
Civil rights movement and billboard charts
The Staple Singers soon used their voices for a unique
and important purpose: Civil Rights campaigning. The shift in tone was caused by a 1963 meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr ., who had attended one of their shows in Montgomery, Alabama. Popular tracks during this period included "It's a Long
Walk to D.C." and "Why Am I Treated So Bad." The group hit the commercial big time in the 1970s, after shifting their focus
to the production of more R&B-orientated music. They attained their first-ever No.1 on the Billboard singles chart for
"Let's Do It Again." The period also witnessed the release of other classic tracks such as "I'll Take You There" and
"Respect Yourself." The decade was the pinnacle of the band's career, with adoring fans across the nation eager to get
their hands on cheap tickets to their shows.
Solo success
Throughout the 1970s, Mavis Staples conducted two careers simultaneously: Her
involvement with the Staple Singers and her own solo career. She first went it alone in 1969, after the release of her
debut album, which bore her namesake. Her solo career throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s received critical acclaim,
although her musical offerings were less commercially successful. However, her career underwent a Renaissance of sorts in
the early 2000s. She released a successful album, "We'll Never Turn Back," in 2007, before collaborating with Jeff Tweedy
on 2010's "You Are Not Alone." The album was a huge success, earning Mavis a Grammy Award. She has continued to work hard
to produce new sounds and albums, releasing an album in 2015 called "Don't Lose This" as well as an extended playlist
called "Your Good Fortune." The 2010s have seen Mavis work with renowned artists such as Nick Lowe and George Clinton. This year promises
to be another busy 12 months for Mavis Staples. She has recently released a new album called "Livin on a High Note,"
working with the likes of indie band Bon Iver and songwriters Neko Case and Nick Cave.
So despite being well into her 70s, it's clear that Mavis Staples has no plans to slow down anytime soon. With more songs,
albums and shows in the pipeline, fans have plenty to look forward to. So they shouldn't delay - head out and grab cheap
