About Martin Lawrence

Born on April 16, 1965 in Frankfurt, Germany to an American military family, comedian and actor Martin Lawrence moved to the U.S. at a young age and was raised in Maryland . Lawrence discovered his gift for comedy at a young age. He has often cited the fact that his talent grew while trying to make his struggling mother laugh: She had a difficult time raising the family and holding down multiple jobs after Lawrence's father left. With some encouragement from a school teacher, Lawrence attended his first open mic, fueling his desire for a career on the comedic stage. After graduating from high school, Lawrence became a regular on the New York City stand-up circuit. Tickets were cheap and easy to come by, but Lawrence soon developed a small but loyal following. He later headed to California with dreams of Hollywood, and soon after a star was born.

Lawrence's big break came in 1985 after he secured a small role on "What's Happening Now!" His appearance on the show led him to a high-profile hosting gig in 1989 - he MCed HBO's "Def Comedy Jam." The show propelled Lawrence further into the limelight and served as a gig after which many notable comedians of the 90s earned their big breaks. During this time, Lawrence developed his high-energy and satirical brand of comedy, and was soon offered his own television show in 1992, aptly named "Martin." Over its five-year course, "Martin" proved to be a critical and commercial success, tackling race issues in America through his wry and observant brand of humor. The show's success earned Lawrence recognition from the NAACP, and he took home two visibility awards for his work on the series. During this time, Lawrence amassed a sizeable fan base, with fans eager to secure cheap Martin Lawrence tickets. The early 90s also marked Lawrence's foray into the world of film. He starred in several notable movies during the period: "House Party," "House Party 2" and fan favorite, "You So Crazy." The latter movie was phenomenally successful at the box office, despite receiving criticism for its crude and sexualized humor.

The mid to late 90s saw Lawrence's fame grow even further and he soon became one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. During the period, he starred in big blockbuster movies including "Bad Boys" alongside Will Smith, and "Life" with Eddie Murphy. His biggest movie project came later, however. The release of "Big Momma's House" secured Lawrence's place as one of Hollywood's leading comedian actors, and by the time he starred in the movie "Black Knight," he was able to command over $16 million for a salary. The success of the movie "Big Momma's House" inspired a popular sequel in 2006: "Big Momma's House 2."
