From Atlanta, using music to move out
Singer Andy Hull struggled to fit in with his hometown community, preferring the musical culture of British Manchester to nearby Atlanta. He had already started writing music in high school, and he soon recruited like-minded friends to start Manchester Orchestra. Their debut album, I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child, piqued the interest of the industry. After throwing their lot in with Canvasback, Manchester Orchestra began to prolifically release new music. Their sound became a perfect match for other media, being featured on everything from Gossip Girl to NHL video games. They've become favorites at festivals like Lollapalooza, Coachella, Riot Fest, and Bonnaroo. In 2010 they launched their own festival, The Stuffing, which happens on Thanksgiving Eve in Atlanta. They stepped outside their indie rock boundaries when Andy Hull and lead guitarist Robert McDowell recorded the soundtrack for Swiss Army Man, a genius feat using only interlaced vocals.
