A Musical Mind Ahead of His Time

Born in 1860, Gustav Mahler grew up in the Austrian empire, in the vibrant town of Iglau. Mahler was surrounded by folk music and street performers, and soon he himself was performing at the town theater. As a teenager he began studying at the Vienna Conservatory. He spent some years making a living as a piano teacher, but in 1880 he finally secured his first conducting position. He worked his way up the ranks, paying his dues in the musical world, and in 1888 he became the director of the Royal Hungarian Opera in Budapest. While conducting, Mahler was also composing. He wrote several symphonies, including the heralded Eighth Symphony, which premiered in 1910. His final conducting performance was at Carnegie Hall in 1911. A few months later he passed away, and his music soon fell out of popularity. It was banned in Nazi Germany. However, in the 1950s Mahler was rediscovered, and his impact on classical music cannot be overstated.

At the vanguard of modernism, Mahler's music still strikes strong chords with audiences all over the world. Feel the surge of the music, the swell of the symphony, by snagging your cheap Mahler tickets today!
