A Voice All Her Own
Born Natalie McIntyre, the young artist grew up in Ohio learning the piano. She adopted her moniker off a mailbox she saw in the neighborhood, using it first as a pen name for stories. Her entrance into music was serendipitous – she ended up covering for a no-show vocalist to record songs she wrote for a friend. Macy Gray soon became obsessed with jazz and Billie Holiday, and it wasn't long before she was working the Los Angeles circuit. Her debut album, 1999's On How Life Is, was an international sensation, with the single "I Try" launching her to superstar status. She continued to release new albums throughout the early 2000s, also making forays into movie soundtracks on films like 8 Mile and Chicago. She made her first on-screen appearance in Training Day. Her fourth studio album, Big, featured stars like Natalie Cole, Fergie, Justin Timberlake , and will.i.am. In 2016 her album Stripped, came out at #3 on the Billboard Jazz Chart, and she performed with Ariana Grande on the song "Leave Me Lonely."
